With increasing awareness of environmental issues, the confectionery sector faces a growing challenge to provide chocolate and candy packaging which is possible to recycle and will not add to landfill waste.

At the same time, in an overcrowded market, attractive presentation is critical. The UK confectionery and chocolate sector is worth £3.5 billion and employs nearly 20,000 people*, but it is a challenge to achieve profitable growth. The importance of sweet and chocolate packaging in achieving market share is a key component of future success.

It is not only packaging concerns that have impacted the confectionery sector. The quest to reduce sugar content in response to government guidelines without compromising taste is an additional consideration, as is the rising cost of raw materials. Consumers too are driving change towards healthier, organic, vegan and lower volume premium products, increasing the need for flexibility in packaging and wrapping.

Boosting efficiency and reducing production time with the latest weighing, wrapping, bagging and palletising techniques will serve to mitigate against other financial pressures.

Candies and sweets are produced in an extraordinary variety of shapes and sizes. Many of these delicacies must be handled very gently and candy wrapping machines should ensure confectionery is packaged to preserve freshness and flavour. To understand and invest in technologically-upgraded reliable candy packaging machines ensures that bulk sweets can be packed at speed and effectively.

Automated confectionery packaging machines may be used to bag, wrap or container-fill a complete range of sweets, including hard or soft candy, gums and liquorice. Solutions vary – liquorice is often flow wrapped, candies may be packed into pre-made pouches or rigid containers, and a vertical form fill and seal bagging machine is usually the best option for gums. Bags can be in the form of pillow pouches, gusseted pouches or stand-up bags to which a zip closure can be added if required, and all must be hygienic, economical and attractive for display on store shelves.

One of the many considerations when packaging chocolate is the danger of the product melting in warmer climates, or indeed the summer months in the UK.  The product may be transported in controlled or uncontrolled temperatures, the consumer outlet’s heating is variable, and then whoever purchases the chocolate is likely to carry it about in a pocket or handbag before eating it.

Kraft, who bought Cadbury some years ago, launched a quest to find such chocolate wrapping, both for primary and secondary layers. Their requirements were that it should not be very much bulkier than existing wrappers, should be economical and ‘single-use, disposable and environmentally friendly.’

Individually-wrapped chocolates such as those found in variety boxes require a multi-style chocolate packing machine which can enclose chocolates in cellophane or foil with a single twist, double twist, Neapolitan-style, an envelope, bunch or side twist.

Inevitably, innovations in packing material mean that packaging machines must be adaptable in order to accommodate different qualities, shapes and sizes of wrapping material and a variety of wrapping requirements.

At the 2019 show, ILAPAK will showcase its individual chocolate and confectionery packaging machines. These have been designed with sensitive product handling and ease of cleaning in mind, combined with attractive pack aesthetics.

ILAPAK’S machines have a proven track record to meet the highest production throughput requirements with their high-speed flexible automation systems.
