Schubert debuts ultrasound packaging skills at PPMA
Schubert’s new thermoforming, filling and closing machine will demonstrate how it uses ultrasound technology to seal and cut packs of ready-to-use syringes on its stand C30 at the PPMA Show at Birmingham’s NEC from September 29 - October 1.
The versatile system will not only show how it produces PET blister cartons at its thermoforming station, but also how it robotically places product into the cavities before simultaneously sealing, cutting and perforating the packs using ultrasound tools.
Schubert says productivity is boosted as ultrasound technology delivers faster sealing times compared to conventional methods while the pack contents are unaffected by the process as it reaches no more than 30°C at normal room temperature. In addition, cutting forces are reduced, leading to less wear and tear on the cutting tool.
“It’s also a process which requires less energy. While ordinary sealing tools must be constantly maintained at a certain temperature, the ultrasound method only requires power very briefly for 200-300 milliseconds per cycle,” explains Gerhard Schubert, chief executive of Schubert GmbH.
He states other value-added benefits include easier tool changes as the ultrasound versions are considerably lighter than traditional sealing equipment while the ability to achieve cleaner contours aids packaging design development.
Schubert’s new TLM-T400 thermoforming line is designed to process all packaging polymers and offers a maximum output of 20 cycles a minute at a drawing depth of up to 150mm. Another version, the TLM-T800, features two separate thermoforming areas. The machines can also be equipped with an automatic roll change facility and a quality mark imprinting device.
The highly-flexible system is not only able to undertake sealing and punching in a single operation, but it also requires only one tool to be changed to accommodate different tray sizes and materials. After punching out the finished packs, the skeleton web is drawn upwards and wound on to a reel or sent to a shredder.
Quality control is monitored by a downstream image processing system fitted to the final TLM-F44 packaging station, which ensures that only packs conforming to the correct standard are passed.
“Schubert packaging machines can now be used for thermoforming plastic film, making them among the most flexible packing systems on the market. Visitors to PPMA will be able to see the new machine’s capabilities and its wide range of benefits,” comments David Maddern, Schubert UK’s sales director.
